By Prof. Nassir Hussein Kahin, Executive Managing Editor Hargeisa, Somaliland – In a decisive move to bolster Somaliland’s infrastructure, the newly appointed Minister of Transport and Roads Development, Hon. Osman Ibrahim Nur Af-gaab, has initiated a series of ambitious road construction and rehabilitation projects. These efforts align with President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi Irro’s vision to enhance connectivity, stimulate economic growth, and improve access to essential services across the nation.Within the first 100 days of the current administration, Minister Af-gaab has overseen the commencement and advancement of several critical infrastructure projects. Among these is the construction of the Borama-Baki road, a key artery expected to significantly boost regional economic activities. The project’s inauguration was personally attended by President Irro, underscoring its importance to the administration’s development agenda.Additionally, the ministry has embarked on the development of the Hargeisa-Balli-gubadle road, aiming to improve access between these vital regions. This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to fulfilling campaign promises and addressing long-standing infrastructural challenges. In the eastern regions, significant progress has been made on the Burao-Erigavo road, officially named the Siilaanyo Road. Spanning approximately 284 kilometers, this project is crucial for linking resource-rich areas to central trade hubs, thereby enhancing economic integration. By 2022, travel time between Burao and Erigavo had been reduced to five hours, with transportation costs per person decreasing from $60-80 to $20.The ministry’s focus extends to improving road safety. Minister Af-gaab has expressed concern over the alarming rise in traffic accidents, with over 600 cases reported in January alone. He attributed 90% of these incidents to driver-related issues and emphasized the need for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and enhanced public awareness campaigns.Anonymous sources within the ministry have lauded Minister Af-gaab’s proactive approach, noting that his leadership has brought a renewed sense of urgency and direction to Somaliland’s infrastructure development. “The minister’s dedication to translating the president’s vision into tangible outcomes is commendable,” remarked one official. “His efforts are setting a benchmark for other ministries to emulate.”As Somaliland continues on its path of development, the accelerated pace of these infrastructure projects reflects the administration’s commitment to fostering economic growth and improving the quality of life for its citizens.
